10 Cleaning & Organising Tips That Never Get Old

If you have been following my blog for a while, you will know I love cleaning and organisation, especially organised home challenges. When my life, home and family are organised, I am a very happy and relaxed person.  Today I am sharing the 10 Tips I regularly use to keep my home clean and organised. These tips never get old, in fact you may already know some of them, but ask yourself...'Do I implement them into my home on a daily basis?' I hope I can inspire you to do so. And because it's the new year, I have also included a few FREE PRINTABLES* for you to print and display in your home.  Enjoy!

Here are my 10 Tips for Cleaning and Organising YOUR HOME...

1. Make your bed
Making your bed every morning sets the tone for the day ahead.  When I get up in the morning, I give the kids breakfast, have a cup of tea and check a few emails, then I will go back into my room and make the bed. When the bed is made, it not only makes the room look cleaner but it will be ready for you to climb into at the end of a busy day. What more can you ask for?

2. Keep surfaces clear
Limiting the items you have on your surfaces definitely helps with this.
When you are preparing or cooking meals, take a few minutes to clear away items and/or dishes that are no longer needed or being used and give the surface a spray and wipe. It will make a difference, and you will feel much better getting it out of the way now, rather than leaving it until later, when you are tired and want to relax.

I like to have a clean kitchen before I go to bed, there is nothing better than waking up to a clean kitchen in the morning, am I right? After dinner, I clear all the plates, load the dishwasher and wash anything that can't go in, leaving them to dry in the rack over night.

Extra tip: Get one of your children to unload the dishwasher in the morning or do it while you are waiting for the kettle to boil, then treat yourself with a nice hot cuppa. Win-win!

3. Nothing left on the floor
At the end of the day, I grab a flexi-tub and pick up anything off the floor that doesn't belong there (I often get the kids to help too), picking up toys, shoes, bags, clothes, books etc and returning the items to their rightful homes. It only takes 10-15 minutes. It's always nice to see the floor again, especially during the school holidays. Be sure to check under the couch and beds too.

4. Have a laundry routine
Would you believe me if I told you I used to do ALL my laundry in one day - it's true! I would wash and hang my clothes and then fold them the same day, however I started slacking in the folding department and my family were left to sift through baskets of washing to find what they needed. Fast forward to now...I do laundry 4 days a week (including bedding in the weekends). By breaking it up over the week, Mt Washmore & Mt Foldmore are not as big and daunting. The most important thing to remember is to 'put the clothes away' once they are folded. If you have to, set the timer!
Extra tip: Give your washing machine a clean at least once a month. You can run a hot cycle with a cap of white vinegar, and wipe down the outside of the machine with a micro-fibre cloth.

Grab yourself a Laundry Sign & Routine FREE PRINTABLE or click on the images below. Simply Print and display in your Laundry.

5. Clean the bathroom
Before you go to bed each night, dedicate a few minutes to giving the bathroom a quick clean.  When you are brushing your teeth, give the hand basin a quick spray and wipe, pick up the bath toys or spray the shower,  leave for minute or two, then rinse. I guarantee it will make you feel good walking in there in the morning.

6. Set a date to clean your oven
This is actually a new tip, one I have been using since we moved into our new home four months ago. Regularly cleaning your oven once a month, will save you a lot of backache later, especially if it has been a while since you last cleaned it. Set a date each month, and mark it on your calendar - cleaning your oven isn't THAT bad! Extra Tip: Use baking soda, white vinegar & a bit of elbow grease for those stubborn stains and your oven will be sparkling new again.

7. Baking Soda & White Vinegar ARE your best friends
I have mentioned these two products before because they are totally awesome and if you don't have them in your Cleaning Caddy - you need to! There are so many ways you can use baking soda and white vinegar in your home.  To get you started, check out this list.

8. Declutter, Declutter, Declutter!
For you to be truly clean and organised, you have to own less stuff! Right? De-cluttering is good for the mind, body and soul and not to mention your home. When you are surrounded by clutter, everything can seem overwhelming. You often find yourself having days where you feel like you are chasing your own tail and you can't keep on top of the 'stuff'. I have done a few organising challenges myself and every time I do a new one, more stuff leaves my home.

I will be putting the well-known KonMari method (from The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo) to the test very soon and I am excited to be sharing my journey with you. Things are about to get real and I am ready to do an overhaul of my home. Wish me luck! If you would like to follow my progress, or even join me, then simply Subscribe to my blog, so you don't miss a post.

9. Label Your Things
The thing I love most about my Pantry is: most things in it are labelled! This is my happy place and is an area I like to keep clean and organised, thanks to the labels. When you label items in your home, it makes it easier for things to be returned to the right place, by you or any member of your family. Make your own labels or invest in a label maker, either way - labelling is your friend, so use it in your home today.

And lastly, my favourite tip...
10 . Meal Plan
Meal planning has changed my life (for the better). Deciding what you are having for dinner over a week or even month (if you wish) will ultimately, save you time and avoid the 'What's for Dinner?' moans and groans about 5pm. Meal planning also helps you save money when you are grocery shopping, because you are only buying the necessary ingredients for the weekly meals you have planned.

Grab your 'What's for Dinner?' FREE PRINTABLE today. Simply click the image below, Print and laminate so you can use it week after week, and pop it on your fridge for the whole family to see.

YOUR TURN: I would love it if you left me a comment below with YOUR #1 tip for keeping your home clean and organised. Ready? Go! And if you know someone who you think will benefit from this list and/or printables, feel free to PIN, TWEET and SHARE.

Thanks for stopping by,
Charlene

#TuesdayTen: Currently (A Fly On The Wall)

This week for #TuesdayTen, the prompt is 10 places you would like to be a Fly on the Wall. I am super tired and could only think of few, e.g. my daughter's classroom - to see what she does all day; In my son's head - I would love to know what a 15 month thinks and how he sees the world, and maybe someone famous, like P!nk or even the Kardashian's house (oh wait, E! IS the fly on their wall).

So there's this thing that some bloggers do - it's kind of like "Taking Stock" - using prompts to let others know what they are "Currently" up to (weekly, as opposed to monthly)...giving you permission to be a fly on the wall in their homes (so to speak)....so this here #TuesdayTen blogpost is inspired by Lisa from The Golden Spoons. (I hope you don't mind, Lisa)
  • Reading - the Lim & Builder's Report of a property we are hoping to buy.
  • Planning - on going out on Saturday to celebrate a friend's Milestone Birthday!! I am looking forward to letting my hair down for a couple of hours!
  • Stressing - about where we are going to live, packing, saying goodbye. Lack of sleep. So much to do, so little time!
  • Wishing - Master M would go to sleep, so I can have a nap too! He was up for over 3 hours last night from 9:30pm...he just wouldn't resettle...and then when he did, he would wake up again and stay awake for another half an hour. I got bugger all sleep...I am a MOMBIE today!
  • Feeling - tired, stressed, anxious, exhausted!
  • Listening - to the rubbish truck take our rubbish away...it's late today, however, at least the rubbish is gone! There will be more next week - as we get closer to MOVING DAY!
  • Thinking - I should really clean the house before I have nap..meh the mess can wait! I NEED sleep!
  • Loving - catching up with the Mums and Bubs from my Coffee Group. We all met at Ante-Natal class and have been having monthly catch ups since Master M was 3 weeks old. He is now 15 months old! Such a great bunch of friends, friends for life!
  • Wearing - warm clothes! It's a bit nippy today! (It's Winter here in New Zealand)
  • Hoping - I get to buy my FIRST HOME soon!! (Keep your fingers crossed for us) Eek!
Tell me, where would you like to be a fly on the wall? or care to share what is CURRENTLY happening in your world at the moment?

Clearing Out The Clutter: Coming Soon

Just call me crazy...as if I don't have enough on my plate...I have signed up to do a 30 Day DeClutter Challenge with the lovely Michelle from An Organised Life.

For those who know me, know I love organisation and declutter challenges...in fact last year, I joined The Organised Housewife in the 20 Days to Organise and Clean Your Home which was fantastic - you can see my journey here.

When I saw Michelle's post about the 30 Day De-clutter Challenge, on her Facebook page,  I got really excited because it is perfect timing...it's the push I need to get my home sorted, de-cluttered and ready to pack (especially for a sentimental hoarder like me)! We recently sold our house , which means we will be moving soon and one of the best things you can do before you move is: to declutter your home - so you are not taking the excess items to the new house. Having a cluttered house = a cluttered mind. For me though - I am REALLY good at hiding my clutter, so it's more "Out of sight - out of mind but that is all about to change, with Michelle's help and my determination of course.

"It’s all about clearing out the accumulated clutter in our homes and lives and minimising a bit. Every day I’ll be sending out a quick morning email with the days tasks. They won’t be huge and overwhelming but little by little we will clear out the clutter and take back control of our homes." (Michelle, An Organised Life)

I have signed up to receive the daily emails, joined the Facebook group and following Michelle on social media (#aol30daydeclutter). I can't wait to begin and start de-cluttering (and packing) my home! Be sure to follow along on my Instagram and my Facebook where I will share my progress! ***Exciting***

It will be nice to move into a new house and call it HOME SWEET (& Clutter-Free) HOME.
If you are interested and would like to declutter your home too - head over to An Organised Life and sign up.

Challenge starts Monday! Bring it on!

R is for Reading Nook Inspiration

Encouraging and supporting reading in the home is very important to me - from a teacher perspective but also as a mother. Last week, I shared some Play Space Inspiration and while I was admiring all the play spaces - I spotted a few gorgeous reading nooks. I am a huge fan of 'nooks', in fact I wouldn't be surprised if every room in our new home will have one.

What I love about reading nooks is that they are simple, cozy and inviting for children (and adults). It can be set up in a corner or area in the home, where it is preferably well lit or near a window for natural light. Add some cushions, blankets & a few favourite toys and it becomes a child's favourite place to chill out and read a book. Books are easily accessible for young children (at eye level) - stored in baskets and bins or on the wall in little shelves (perfect little DIY project). Reading nooks are not just for books either, you can mix it up by using a variety of reading materials e.g. magazines, newspapers, word cards, a range of books (different genre etc), paper and pencils/pens. You can also add in a few toys to keep fiddly fingers pre-occupied. I am looking forward to creating this fun, yet educational space in our home.

Here are some amazing Reading Nooks I am loving RIGHT NOW!
As you walk into the room, you are welcomed by a corner library. Absolutely love how they have utilised the wall space. I would be totally tempted to grab a book from the shelf. find a cozy spot to sit and read. What do you think?
The Crafty Woman: Play Room Library

Inspired by Reggio and Montessori - I am loving the baskets, and mixed textures in this lovely reading corner/nook. It looks very inviting.

This corner is Gorgeous with a capital G. So many great ideas! Check out the amazing up-cycled tires.
(Featured on Preschool Inspirations)

I really like the monogram letters. I came across a post that has some great DIY Letter Decor Ideas. Spice Racks or DIY shelves are perfect to display books too.

I like the simplicity of this reading nook - displaying of the books using shelves, a bean bag and some funky curtains. I would love to read a book in this space.

P is for Play Space Inspiration

I am a teacher by trade and a mother by nature who loves browsing through Pinterest and pinning lots of play space ideas. Play is an important part of childhood, so creating a play space for your baby or toddler will be beneficial to their learning and development.

Not sure where to start? Jen from IHeart Organising has come up with a simple list of items that are consistent with play spaces (or play rooms for older children) and is a great place to start if you are wanting to set one up.

I am currently working on updating Master M's Play Space, so I thought I would share some of my favourite and inspiring PLAY SPACES with you. Just click on the image to directed to the original post. Enjoy!
via The Imagination Tree
What I love about it: This play space is simple, yet very effective. I love the use of mirrors, treasure baskets and open ended toys. I am also inspired by the philosophies of Montessori and Reggio.

What I love about it: This "Learning Corner" is super cute. I love the alphabet posters (Casey designed these herself) and the art work - I actually made one with Master M last week and will be putting it in his new play space. You can see Casey's tutorial here. I love the thick woven baskets too, they are perfect for books and for treasure baskets.

What I love about it: I found this post when Master M was a few months old and absolutely loved the idea of a long mirror in his play space. We had one tucked away in the wardrobe so I brought it out and he loved it! It was funny watching his facials when he saw his own face. A low shelf to display toys is a great idea too.

What I love about it: Creating mini centers is a great idea! Having different areas with materials/toys will encourage your baby to crawl and explore. Love it!

What I love about it: I love the shelving units with baskets - a great storage system for toys and books at eye level for your little one. Displaying artwork is important too, I love the 'clothesline' idea - definitely incorporating this idea into Master M's play space. I am also on the hunt for a little table and chair set.

#TuesdayTen - Most Hated Household Jobs!

They are the jobs we love to hate and hate to love...I am talking about Household Jobs/Chores. I asked the question on my Facebook page  "What household job/chore do you hate the most? or wish you never have to do again? And it was no surprise to me that WASHING was the Most Hated Household Job. It's definitely mine, especially the folding and putting away part. Most of the time, and I know it's a bad habit, my clean clothes will stay in the basket for a few days before I can be bothered to fold them and put them away in the drawers. Other jobs I would be happy never to do again are: dishes, cleaning the highchair & cleaning the toilet. Check out the jobs that were hated the most by some of my readers...

Kids Parties: A Little Golden Book themed First Birthday

PARTY #1
Recently, we celebrated Master M's first birthday - in fact, I have been planning this Little Golden Book themed party since he was about 5 months old after being inspired by Vanessa over at Tried and True Blog who created this gorgeous Little Golden Book Baby Shower and also Dylan's Little Golden Book Birthday by Nashville Moms. I collected so many Little Golden Books from op-shops, friends and family, to use as decorations and to start a collection for Master M to read. I scrolled through Pinterest and Google images to get more ideas and there were plenty to choose from. After months of planning, it was finally time to put everything together and I am really happy with the way it turned out! Master M had a great first birthday with his friends and family and now I get to share it with YOU...Enjoy!

THE INVITATIONS
I would have designed my own invitation however I found this gorgeous one on Etsy via WonderAndWishes (click on the name to see more invitation designs). I couldn't resist and had to purchase it. I was very impressed how quick and easy it was to order from Etsy (first timer). The printable digital (.jpeg) file was emailed to me within 24 hours, I saved it on my usb and had the invitations printed on 6x4 photo paper at The Warehouse Stationery. The invitations looked amazing and I absolutely love them.
SAMPLE ONLY via WonderandWishes
Sending out the birthday invitations... I added two strips of golden washi tape on the side of the envelope to set the theme...and wrote names & addresses using gold pen. It was a nice surprise for our friends who received 'happy mail' in their letterboxes. And it suited the vintage (old school) theme I was going for.

THE DECORATIONS
Table display
As I have mentioned before I collected Little Golden Books from op-shops, friends and family for over 6 months prior to Master M's first birthday. Pinterest is such a wonderful tool when planning and organising parties (of any kind) - and that is where most of my ideas came from. I love the old school, vintage feel that the Little Golden Book gives!
I found this gorgeous white frame from The Warehouse on special for $5 - it was perfect for the invitation (I did the same for Miss B's party invitation too). I bought a wooden M & some mod podge from my friend Tracy at The Scrapheap and decoupaged images from a spare copy I had of The Poky Little Puppy. Add a copy of the book and the mantel piece looked complete.

"Everything I need to Know I Learned from a Little Golden Book" book was perfect to use as a keepsake for Master M's birthday. I got everyone that attended his party parties to write a little message for the birthday boy. This is something he (I) will treasure forever.

Wooden blocks - I spelt out Master M's name using these blocks too
Books galore - I managed to get a nice collection of Little Golden Books for Master M
I made my own bunting using pages from the Golden Books and hung them diagonally across the lounge. I also made yellow & white tissue poms-poms. Simple, yet effective DIY decorations to suit any theme.

This was my favourite decoration: Each month I took a photo of Master M with his giraffe friend, "Raffe". He wore a white onesie and I used Monthly Stickers, that I got from a friend, to capture his first year. I printed them out on 5x7 and stuck them on to the inside cover of the Little Golden Books. They look really cool and it's a great way to showcase how much our baby has grown in his first year.

Milestone bunting
Bunting: View from the kitchen
All ready for our guests to arrive...Play Area...
I put a vintage (woolen) blanket in the middle of the lounge for our toddler friends to play on and Mums to sit around. I had a treasure basket,  DIY Drum and shape sorters for the kids to play with on the blanket, plus there was the ball pit, a range of toys with 'wheels' and other toys to keep them entertained. (no games - just play)

BIRTHDAY OUTFIT
This was a last minute decision and I absolutely LOVE it! I didn't know what Master M was going to wear to his parties, so I grabbed a white onesie and some Sharpies and created this Little Golden Book '#1' outfit for him! Super cute!

PARTY FAVOURS
I wasn't planning on doing party favours, but these windmills are super cute and a perfect little keepsake to give to your guests. I only spent $5 for the doweling (bundle of 4x1.2m), the rest of equipment I already had e.g. the pages from Golden Books, and pins (tacks).

Anneliese from Aesthetic Nest shared these awesome free printables on her blog a while ago (thank you, Anneliese. You're a gem!). I printed the cute little book covers and put them on white lolly bags that were filled with gummy worms (Party favour: Bookworms). I also used the same little book covers and made cupcake toppers (see photo below).

FOOD & DRINK
I made The Organised Housewife's amazing and easy to make Easy Tropical Punch, and used the little milk bottles (you may remember them from the Little Man Baby Shower). I bought the yellow straws and plastic cups from KMart. I also had bottles of water available (24 for $10 from Countdown).
Tropical Punch
A massive thanks to everyone that brought a plate to share, we had a range of sweet and savoury. It's the best way to do things nowadays, saves costs, and your guests won't mind (well, mine didn't).
Mini cupcakes with the Little Golden Book cover cake toppers I made using Anneliese's printables. (How cute do they look!)

Some more yummy treats....

THE CAKE
I had big plans of making a giant cupcake for Master M's cake, but with other things happening all at once, I just couldn't do it all. I bought this Indulgent Chocolate Cake instead, added a gold ribbon, my own DIY Cake Bunting and a #1 candle. That's it! Something simple, yet perfect for the theme! Master M thought it was pretty cool and that's the main thing! (check out more cake pics below).

Big smile of approval!
Yummy!
***Happy 1st Birthday Master M***

PARTY #2
In the afternoon, we continued with the birthday celebrations, with a BBQ dinner with our family & close friends. This time we had TWO cakes (Master M's ONE & Miss B's TEN)...again simple cakes - with ribbon, cake bunting and a candle placed on trays that I covered with wrapping paper. I bought the Paris themed wafer paper from Kiwi Cakes and added an Eiffel tower on Miss B's cake. (Miss B's Paris themed birthday party COMING SOON - Watch this Space)

TWO parties in ONE day was full on, however I was passionate about the birthday theme and everything worked out in the end!
